This fountain is the first design of today's reproduction antique absinthe fountains, hence the name "#1" fountain. Although the original antique design of the this fountain dates back to the late 1800's, this reproduction was first introduced in 2004. From the acorn finial to the waves in the mouth blown glass reservoir, this Belle Époque fountain is an exact copy of that original.

Absinthe fountains were mostly used in high-end bars because of their expensive price tag. They would have been brought to the table where the customer could prepare the absinthe himself. Absinthe fountains were (and still are) the preferred way to prepare absinthe, as one can perfectly control the rate of water--from a slow drip to a soft steady stream. Unfortunately due to accidents and other various mishaps through the years, very few antique fountains have survived intact with their original glass bowl and spouts, making them very rare and sought after.

Proper use consists of: pouring an ounce of absinthe into an absinthe glass, then placing an absinthe spoon on top of the glass and a sugar cube atop the spoon. The lid of the fountain is removed and fresh water and ice is added into the glass bowl. The spigot is slightly turned and the ice water is slowly dripped from the fountain onto the piece of sugar. The cold sugar water then drips from the spoon into the glass of absinthe releasing oils and perfuming the air with fennel, grand wormwood and anise. The combination also begins to turn milky white in color, as the water mixes with the anise. Refresh water before each use.

Fountain will accommodate 1 glass to 4 glasses at the same time. Drink ratio varies from 1 part absinthe, to between 3 to 5 parts water, depending on one's preference. California Prop 65 compliant when properly used.

As is my habit, l did a fair amount of research into available absinthe fountains before committing to purchase, especially as whatever l ended up purchasing would need to be sent half way around the world to my home in Brisbane Australia. I had read various alerts on different websites as to the dubious quality of some fountains, so did have a little trepidation in choosing a fountain.......however, my fears were unfounded as the fountain arrived in very good order and exceeded my expectations - perhaps those alerts on other websites are just a marketing ploy........ Several friends have passed admiring comments on the quality and presentation of the product and l have happily directed them to Maison Absinthe. A birthday present for my wife, who is a very happy recipient.
